This genus, almost worldwide in the distribution has approximately 150 species. Only a few of the species can grow underwater while most of them inhabiting in the wet land or periodically flooded locations. The species Polygonum Pedunculare is from South East Asia. The stem is upright with long internodes. The leaves (5-8 CM long and 2.5-3 CM broad) are alternate with characteristic stem clasping sheath. They are bright green and the leaf blade is more or less triangular. The floating leaves are linear and elliptical. This plant can be grown in the aquarium as well as the terrarium. They can be planted in small groups in Mid-Background position. Polygonum SP is another species of unknown origin has become very popular because it can produce brownish green coloured leaves under optimum light conditions. This plant is a true aquatic plant. The leaves with characteristic stem clasping sheath are narrower than that of Polygonum Pedunculare. When arranged in small groups, they can provide effective contrast against a green background.
