They are commonly known as pennyworts. This genus includes 100 over species, but only a few species can adapt to submersed growth. Hydrocotyle Leucephala and Hydrocotyle Verticillata originate from America while Hydrocotyle Vulgaris comes from Europe and Africa. Hydrocotyle Leucephala has kidney shaped leaves with cernate margins. The petiole runs in to deepest point of the cut on the leaf lamina. Hydrocotyle Sibthorpioides has leaves that are nearly lobed to form 2-4 lobules. The petiole attachment is similar to that of Hydrocotyle Leucephala. Hydrocotyle Verticillata has bright green leaves that are shield-like and not incised at the base. Development of roots from the node is common for Hydrocotyle Leucephala and Hydrocotyle Verticillata. All these plants have a strong tendency to float along the water surface.
